Get ghoulishly glam Halloween nails

Elyse Piwonka, a Los Angeles-based Orly rep, used the brand's Monster Mash polish as the base for this design, followed by Orly's Liquid Vinyl polish dotted on the tips. All you need is a small paintbrush—and a steady hand—to create this look from Danielle Black and Jenny Stencel of Polish You Pretty, a nail-art blog based in Ontario, Canada. To begin, paint your nails white. Then, start the bloodshot lines around the edge of the nail first, says Black. Draw a small black circle within the blue for the eyeball—or for a shortcut, a stick-on googly eye works just fine. You can also switch up the eye colors, says Black. Fleury Rose, who has designed nails for Chanel Iman and Florence Welsh, created the details of this Day of the Dead–inspired design. After painting on a background shade and letting it dry, she used a tiny paint brush dipped in bright varnishes from Illamasqua in Collide, Force, Smash, and Ruthless to create the skulls and roses. Sophie Harris-Greenslade, the U.K. artist behind the eye-candy mani blog The Illustrated Nail, says you can easily get this gradient look. First, paint nails white; then, using a striping brush, paint black polish around the perimeter of each nail. Next, take a sponge, dip it in black polish and dab it halfway up the nail starting at the tip. Apply gray polish and some silver glitter—or try Sonia Kashuk's Starry Night, a glittery black polish—directly above the tips to complete the ombré look. For a totally foolproof manicure, try this spooky black bat design from The Daily Polish's Kaitlin Ferland. I created this design with a hole puncher I found in the scrapbook section of Walmart, she says. To create this futuristic nail design, Fleury Rose painted the entire nail with a silver polish (Illamasqua Snap is her choice) and then layered silver leaf—available at art stores—over the wet polish. Samira Asemanfar, founder of Bellacures nail salons in Los Angeles, designed this minimalist seasonal striped look. After painting nails with two coats of orange polish and letting them dry completely, use a piece of tape to get a straight line alongside of your nail bed. You can use a nail pen (or polish and small brush) to create this drippy design by DIY Nails artist Tammy Koslowski. First, apply a base color and let dry. Next, drop a ball of polish—like Sally Hansen's Mellow Yellow—onto the middle of the nail. Next, Koslowski says use enough polish so that there's enough to drag the 'drip' toward your cuticle, but not so much that it's messy! Repeat a few times on each nail, making sure to get the edges. For this look, use a solid white polish to paint the entire nail with two coats, Asemanfar says. After your nails are dry, use a fine brush and black polish to dab on two circles for the eyes, an upside down small heart for the nose and four or five thin lines at the edge of your nail. Celebrity New York nail artist Jin Soon created this chic two-tone, blood-dripping look. To achieve it the spooky style at home, prep your nails with a basecoat. Follow with two coats of Jin Soon Coquette—or another bold crimson like OPI Red. To achieve the drip effect, place two or three dots of Jin Soon Risqué (a rusty brown) to the center of the nail. Use a detail brush to fill in the darker section, painting back toward the nail bed. To create this marbleized design (by Piwonka), take a small glass of water and drop some orange polish—like Orly's Right Amount of Evil—on top of the water surface. The lacquer will spread out on top of the water creating rings. It will look like a target or bull’s-eye, says Piwonka. Take the fine point side of a black nail pen and drag it through the rings to create a marbleized design. Nail artist Stephanie Berry of Haus of Lacquer in Vancouver, B.C., used a small detailer brush and red nail polish to create the wounds in this creepy-cool design. To get the look, apply a coat of white then dab on small lines of red polish to create cuts, says Berry. Place the 'wounds' randomly on each nail. It looks best when they don't look too uniform. Let the polish dry and then sew it up: Dip the brush into black nail polish and then paint fine lines and crisscrosses over the wounds to make the stitches. SHOP NOW: Detailer brush set, $17
