Long Hair at 50

Who says you have to cut your hair short after a certain age? One woman revels in defying the rules

  • Though I'd had long hair all of my adult life, I didn't feel comfortable enough to display it until my early 40s. For most of my career, I wore a severe bun; it was my armor, along with the suits I donned. I worked in a very corporate environment with many men—whom I do feel look at you differently when you have long, flowing locks—and I wanted to be taken seriously.

Then I hit 43 and, in quick succession, I started my own business, first contemplated leaving my husband (which I eventually did), and found a New York City stylist, Adolfo Pliego, who is a master of long hair. Once I obtained some killer layers, I found the confidence to wear my hair loose and free. It was liberating and transformative: I could be professional and sexy. The reaction I got from friends and family was hugely positive; they'd always thought my "corporate" bun made me look too serious.
