Coming of Age1 of 8
By Rachel Hayes
While trying out a dramatic eye or a major updo can be fun, a few missteps could leave you looking older than your age—something we haven't wanted since spring break 1997. Here, seven looks that can go oh-so-wrong—along with tips for how to get them right.
Helmet Law2 of 8
Lily Collins may be 24 years old, but at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards, her stiff updo aged her by a few decades. The lesson: Youthful-looking hair moves when you do. If you're going for a styled updo, pull out a few face-framing pieces for a softer look.
To Dye For3 of 8
If you want a drastically different look, dyeing your hair is a quick shortcut. Just watch out if you opt for jet black locks, which can look severe (think: Angelina Jolie circa 2001). The secret to making it work? Women with pale complexions shouldn’t go darker than espresso, while those with medium to olive skin should avoid reddish undertones. If you have dark skin, then you can pull off minky black hair. And no matter which shade you choose, use a shine serum when blow-drying—this will help hair reflect light, making it appear healthy and fresh.
A Thin Line4 of 8
Brows are another example of where it's easy to misfire. While perfectly shaped arches open up your eyes, spindly, overplucked brows quickly add a few years to your look. Exhibit A: Gwen Stefani’s tweezed brows versus her full, defined arches. The trick: Don't press the tip of your brow pencil against your skin. Instead, hold it parallel to your face so you can skim the sides of it along your brows to avoid any telltale lines. Then use a brow comb to blend.
Roll Out5 of 8
What's the biggest difference between a soccer-mom bob and a red-carpet-worthy one? Rolled-under ends, which can make a mid-length hairstyle look instantly outdated. See how much more fun, young and stylish Malin Akerman looks when her bob is done straight and piece-y.
Lip Service6 of 8
Think about how black dresses make you look your skinniest (love it!). The same thing happens when you wear dark lipstick—your lips appear thinner (hate it!). As we age, our lips naturally lose volume, so dark lipstick doesn’t help. Plus, opaque hues bleed into the fine lines around your lips and enhance existing wrinkles. Just look at how Beyonce’s dark merlot lip, on the left, compares to her slightly glossy pink pucker. If you want to wear a dark hue, you still can—just make sure to coat your lips with balm before applying lipstick, and carefully blot for a softer sheer finish.
Chalk It Up7 of 8
A matte look can be dramatic and fun, but proceed with caution when it comes to foundations or setting powders that have a matte finish. Younger skin naturally appears more radiant, so makeup that doesn't reflect tends to be less flattering. Here, Khloe Kardashian demonstrates the difference between matte skin and a dewy complexion. If you're set on trying a matte look, just apply a radiance-boosting face serum before your foundation, which will give your skin a natural glow and soften the overall effect.
Dark Shadows8 of 8
Just looking at the photo on the left, it's hard to believe Kristen Stewart is just 23 years old. This is a classic (and common!) example of how applying too much eye makeup can instantly age you. Youthful eyes look big, bright and wide open. Tons of dark eyeshadow and loads of mascara have the opposite effect.
