A Weighty Issue
For those of us who thought that we'd stop obsessing about our weight after a certain age, a new study delivers distressing news. Eating disorders—long thought to be the province of teens and 20-somethings—are common in American women well into middle age.
A recent study in International Journal of Eating Disorders reported that, among women aged 50 and over, a shocking 70 percent wished to lose weight, and 62 percent said that their weight negatively impacted their lives. Some resort to drastic measures: 8 percent reported purging.
Researchers found that negative body image and unhealthful practices were most prevalent among women in their 50s but can extend to age 75 and beyond. Hopefully, with awareness, those numbers will drop, and we can become older and wiser. - having a moment
