Fall Hair, Two Ways

Take One: This romantic, side-swept style calls for a great texturing cream to separate waves, says Eva Scrivo, owner of Eva Scrivo Salon in New York City. Twist and roll hair down either side of the head and then loosely pin behind the ear, she says. The beauty of this look (as seen at Rodarte) is that it's meant to look effortless and imperfect, so you can't go wrong.

Take Two: For Nina Ricci, hair was teased-at-the-crown to create this retro-inspired look. Slightly edgier than the side-swept version, this style works for all hair textures. The trick is the two-inch center part, notes Scrivo.

Take One: The hair at Yves Saint Laurent was severe but striking. This deep part works best on women with heart-shaped or square faces. Scrivo says that pomade is the name of the game when attempting this style. Use a boar bristle brush to smooth product to scalp, and then fasten into a tight ponytail or bun, she suggests.

Take Two: At Soiya Rykiel, leaving more texture in the hair and shortening the length of the part created a softer style. Start with a rough blow-dry, says Erin Anderson, artistic director for Woodley & Bunny in New York City. Follow that up with a loose side bun and smoothing cream applied just at the part.

Take One: Wearing hair loosely knotted made a casual but chic statement in Elie Saab's fall show. Anderson recommends blow-drying hair with a round brush for soft, lustrous strands that will lay smooth around the face.

Take Two: If your hair is thick, then wet it at the top and pull into a taut, sleek ponytail that you can leave untamed. Add a plume to up the drama.

Take One: Messy, undone braids still reign the runway. At Pucci, Rapunzel-length hair was first curled and then loosely braided down the back. Use a thickening spray to give thin hair more weight before you braid.

Take One: This romantic look from Dolce & Gabbana is soft and sexy. Gently back-comb the crown area to smooth the surface, says Anderson. Pin it into a chignon, bun or even bouncy ponytail.

Take Two: The beehive is back! (Sort of.) Anderson loves this throwback 'do but says Jean Paul Gaultier's version is nearly impossible to copy. These are wigs! she warns.

Take One: For morning after tousled waves like those seen at Chris Benz, Anderson says to spritz on a volumizing spray, and then grab strands at random and twist around the barrel of a curling iron. Leave some of the ends a bit more straight, she says. You want lived-in waves, so varying up the pattern will look as if you didn't try too hard.

Take Two: Girls with naturally wavy hair and long layers can do a modified version of this look from Prabal Gurung's show. After diffusing most of your hair, curl just the front pieces away from the face, says Anderson.
