How To Wear Coral Lips ... And Not Look Like Your Grandma
By Zoe SchaefferCoral lips are emerging as one of the looks-of-the-moment, showing up on the runways and on celebs like Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Aniston. And because the trend can easily go south (and we say that literally — one wrong move can make you look like your Floridian grandma) we asked Chanel makeup artist Rachel Goodwin how to keep it modern, flattering and most importantly, wearable. Here are her tips to keep in mind.
Match your skin tone. Coral tones brighten up skin like no other. Dark and olive complexions look great in shades with orange (think tangerine) while paler, fair skin glows in shades with pink (think salmon.) And while you might think that redheads are a bad fit for the trend, Rachel says that pure, warm shades (think peach) look simply gorgeous.
Find the right texture. Sheer textures are your best friend when it comes to trying a new, bold color. These formulas are easier to apply and are typically more wearable. While mattes are pretty, they can also be tricky as they will dull the skin if the shade is even slightly off.
Keep makeup minimal. Rachel says the general rule of thumb is the bolder the lip, the less makeup needed elsewhere. A sheer, glossy texture should be teamed with tinted moisturizer, a few coats of black mascara and defined brows. Brighter, richer textures call for just a bit of light bronzer. (Nix the blush — it will only compete!)
Keep it current. Stick to sheer formulas that complement your skin tone and steer clear of anything frosty. Shimmery corals hark back to the '80s (and you don't want to go there) so the less sparkle, the better.
To make the makeup counter less daunting, we found some fool-proof corals that are both sophisticated and fresh. First-timers will love Nars Sheer Lipstick in Love Devotion which is both translucent and bright, making lips look juicy. Redheads will wow in Chanel Rouge Allure in Exotic which is a perfect, warm shade. And those who want to brave a bold, nighttime look can try the uber chic Tom Ford Beauty Private Blend Lip Color in True Coral. No matter how you wear the trend, coral lips are a great way to make a stylish statement this season.
