Minority Report

A survey from the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery showed that more than 50% of respondents felt that plastic surgery has grown more popular among members of their own racial/ethnic group over the past five years, specifically among Asian-American, African-American and Hispanic patients. Even more interesting? Thirty percent of respondents said they would seek out a surgeon of the same race/ethnicity as themselves.

Tom Ford, the dapper fashion designer, who had beauty buffs swooning over his decadent Private Blend Lip Color Collection last year, will parlay his lipstick and fragrance collections into a full-blown beauty line later this year — to include cosmetics and nail color. Fingertips can only do so much, so skincare companies are innovating new ways to get their products into our pores. Look out for exfoliating pads and riffs on gadgets including the Clarisonic brush and NuFace face-firming device. Kate Somerville, for one, just launched resurfacing peel pads that slip over your three middle fingers like a puppet — meant to mimic a professional-strength treatment peel.

Emma Watson’s honey-toned mane — which went from long and lustrous to pixie-short late last year — is a bellwether for beauty looks to come, say some celebrity hairdressers, both on and off the red carpet. And after years of “Real Housewives”-style extensions and flat-ironing, we’re ready for a little less maintenance in the locks department.

On the heels of Target’s many beauty collaborations, swanky skincare line Kinerase has just launched its Dr. LeWinn for Kinerase collection exclusively at Walgreens and Walmart. Packing clinical-strength kinetin, Kinerase’s signature antioxidant, it’s the next best thing to using the cult-favorite beauty line, at a fraction of the price.

Retail Therapy

Legendary makeup artist François Nars launched his luxe makeup line, NARS, 17 years ago, but Thursday marked the debut of the brand’s first-ever flagship store, in New York’s West Village. The black-and-white shop opened with a cache of store-exclusive items, including a cinnamon-hued lipstick, dubbed 413 Bleecker for the address of the sleek boutique.

Measuring Tool

Plastic surgeon Dr. Stanley Jacobs has been on a mission to discover a way to scientifically measure the results of doctors and surgeons, and now he’s created The Cutometer MPA 580 which measures the “visco-elasticity” of the skin within a millionth of an inch. One can then compare results of procedures (like liposcution, laser resurfacing and face lifts) and products to understand better the biomechanics of how the skin works, according to Dr. Jacobs.

Cellular Level

Lancôme, Kate Somerville and Emerge are just a few of the skincare companies to recently incorporate stem cell technology (not actual human stem cells, mind you) into facial creams and serums. The claim is that the ingredients, which often contain plant stem cells, boost the turnover potential of the skin’s cells.
