8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-Nos
- 8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-NosBy Amy Elisa KeithThere are few things more off-putting than a dirty litter box in the kitchen or the smell of wet dog in a living room. If you're guilty of either transgression, then it may be time to rethink whose house you’re living in—yours or your pet's? Interior designer and animal lover Kim Myles shares the biggest decor mistakes dog and cat owners make, along with easy solutions to help you take back your house while still pampering your pet.http://static1.glo.com/photos/Original/115134_Original.jpg
- 8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-NosMistake: Upholstering furniture with plush or deep-weave fabrics Kim's Fix: The truth is, you cannot live impeccably with pets. You have to accept it and make certain concessions. For example, my couch and all of my upholstered pieces are very flat, matte, making them easy to wipe and (the key!) vacuum. Don't go for a velvet or a texture that would trap the hair.http://static.glo.com/photos/Original/115135_Original.jpg
- 8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-NosMistake: Storing the litter box in the kitchenKim's Fix: I put the litter in a closet. It's private and not smelly. You can get in and clean it but it's not something that you have to see every minute of every day. If you don't have room in a closet, then consider the bathroom. After all, it's more sensible (and sanitary) than the kitchen.http://static2.glo.com/photos/Original/115136_Original.jpg
- 8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-NosMistake: Housing the cat scratch post in the living roomKim's Fix: Scratch posts are never appealing or attractive. If I created and designed a stylish one, I'd be a rich woman. Honestly, put it in the garage.http://static2.glo.com/photos/Original/115137_Original.jpg
- 8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-NosMistake: Dressing your bed in expensive, delicate linensKim's Fix: Insisting on a material or an item that you know does not fit the facts of your life is a major mistake pet lovers make. I hand sewed a duvet cover out of silk. Then Milo peed on it literally five minutes later. That's what a lot of homeowners do: They put in priceless things and get mad when they're messed up. So if you want silk, consider silk curtains instead.http://static2.glo.com/photos/Original/115138_Original.jpg
- 8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-NosMistake: Placing vintage or heirloom furniture in reach of an animalKim's Fix: Cats can destroy upholstered pieces, wooden pieces and it's overwhelming at times. But if you want to have a cat and your wooden pieces, consider getting the cat claw covers.http://static2.glo.com/photos/Original/115139_Original.jpg
- 8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-NosMistake: Cleaning your apartment or home every other weekKim's Fix: I have a Dyson, a high-powered vacuum for the pet hair. It's a fact of life, the hair. I vacuum every two days. It's a must!http://static.glo.com/photos/Original/115140_Original.jpg
- 8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-NosMistake: Having a bunch of pet toys throughout the houseKim's Fix: If your pet's toys are taking over the space, then you have too many. I have a basket that's on the floor where I keep my dog's toys. It's small and I can tuck it in a corner.http://static.glo.com/photos/Original/115141_Original.jpg
- 8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-NosMistake: Forgetting that pets leave odors even if you are no longer sensitive to themKim's Fix: Febreze is key, but nothing takes the place of good old-fashioned cleaning. The greatest compliment to me is when people say, Oh my gosh, I didn’t know you had a pet. It's a victory for me.http://static2.glo.com/photos/Original/115142_Original.jpg8 Pet Owner Home Decor No-Nos8/21http://static1.glo.com/photos/Original/115134_Original.jpg
