Floating Cocoon

An ostrich egg was the inspiration for Berni Du Payrat's Cocoon Tree. This spherical folly can be hoisted up in the trees via 12 anchor points for suspension and stability, but is equally adaptable for land use. The 130-pound, 9-foot-diameter aluminum-framed sphere is wrapped in a waterproof tarp, and is thoughtfully equipped with mosquito screens, a custom mattress, and duvet and can hold up to a ton.

Flotation Device

Another suspension bed, this one by Dedon and an open-air version, is woven like a basket, padded with an array of pillows and offers a come-one-come-all comfort vibe. Nearby tree trunks, strategically placed, are cleverly adapted as useful side tables.

Modern Cottage

The Cottage won best outdoor furniture design from ELLE Decor's International Design Awards this year. The part daybed, part perma-tent was designed by Patricia Urquiola for Kettal and features an aluminum exterior with evenly spaced wood slats. Drapery softens the structure and makes it irresistibly fort-like while maintaining a fresh and airy feel.

Decked Out

For Pamela Berger, the screened sleeping porch is "a perfect place to work on my laptop, read the paper, nap, make calls, nap ... you get the idea." When she enclosed her 400-square-foot back porch, she made the hanging bed the focus of the new cozy room. Constructed of 2-by-4s and 2-by-6s, the full-size bed, supported by hemp rope and custom brackets, can hold up to 1,000 pounds. Berger, who blogs about the Southern way of life at Sweet Peach says, "I encourage the idea of sleeping porches … to sway and daydream. It's good for the soul."
