"For home decorating, the minute you start putting heavy colors in, you feel heavy," says expert David Bromstad. "The weather doesn’t have to mean decorating in grays or monotone." Instead, he advises, "go for bright pinks and yellows."

Tip #3: Roll on the Drama

Head to your local paint store for an impactful color change. "Wall color is the most inexpensive way to change a room and the most dramatic," he says. Keep in mind, warns Bromstad, "It's also the most time consuming and permanent."

Tip #4: Throw It Anywhere

For a quick fix, buy bright-colored home accessories like pillows, vases and throws. "Even if you have an old piece of furniture like a dresser, paint it gray and whenever you want a change just keep painting over and over."

Tip #5: Drape Your Home in Warmth

"Curtain panels can change the whole look of a room," says Bromstad of swapping out your window treatments. "To make a big statement but not a permanent one, buy bold curtains in reds, oranges or greens to liven up your space and give the appearance of wall color."

Tip #6: Rework What You've Got

Tackle the couch for a true instant upgrade by covering the existing back pillows in a different color. "Go buy oversize 36-inch pillowcases and line your couch with colorful pillows," he says. "It’s easy."

Tip #7: Accent the Space

An accent color wall is a great way to go bright. This feature wall should be where "your bed, couch or entertainment center lives and is the focal point of the room," adds Bromstad of this easy DIY upgrade.

"Plums, purples and muted purples will be really hot for the next few years and they are not going anywhere," says Bromstad of this unique trend. And don't worry, if it sounds too girly for the man in your house, balance it with gray or tan walls.

Tip #9: Embrace the Blue-ty

Icy blues are also a great gender-neutral color and work for every room of the house as a "calming" tone that can be the basis for brighter accessories in cobalt or navy. "Blue and green are the most universal for men and women."

"I love all the organic items that are out in the market and the things that are hearkening back to the earth," says Bromstad. "Adding something natural and interesting in the home creates a timeless and organic look."
