Shake It Up With Summer's Coolest Ice Cream Trends
By Natasha Burton
With Memorial Day past us (and summer officially on the horizon!), we should probably be concerned about getting ourselves bikini-ready. But, alas, we are consumed by a far sweeter aspect of the season: ice cream.
Sure, looking good in that bathing suit sounds like a pretty enticing idea, but it actively works against the cool satisfaction that ice cream brings us. When it comes down to it, we'd rather cover up that tummy with a pretty sarong than forgo our fave warm-weather treat.
In this spirit, we hunted down expert opinion on the most stylish ice cream flavors of the season, as a non-alcoholic shake sounds sublime for happy hour right now. The ideal summer treat starts with fresh — and refreshing — ingredients, according to Shiho Yoshikawa, the chef at Sweet Rose Creamery in Brentwood, CA.
“I like to have a lot of sorbet and sherbet. Whatever is in season, that's what we go for: peaches, nectarines, any sort of good fruit,” Yoshikawa says. She just whipped up mint ice cream with real mint for the Creamery, which she notes may taste a little different than the sweeter, peppermint-candy-tinged flavor people are used to. “To me, this is more refreshing,” she says.
Her recipe for perfect summer ice cream? “You want to have some creamy flavor, but you don't want it to be too heavy. [You want flavors] that can be palate-cleansing.” She hopes to combine these elements at Sweet Rose this summer, mentioning one concoction in particular: coconut-lime ice cream with a little chili added to spice things up. To that, we can only say one thing: Mmmmm.
