How to Create a Romantic Bedroom

When it comes to creating a romantic space, you want the room to feel open and inviting — never stuffy. While there's nothing wrong with adding a touch of formality to your bedroom (with a chandelier, for example), keeping things simple and relaxed makes it more love-ready.

Light as a Feather

Coziness is key when creating an inviting bedroom, and you can quickly turn your bed into a sanctuary with some cushy bedding. Start by choosing a fluffy down comforter — a goose feather duvet is both light and super insulating. (Or, if you're allergic, opt for a synthetic version made with polyester fill.)

On the Double

Use two comforters for an ultra-plush experience. Layers make a bed look both lived in and luxurious. Adding in some soft cotton linens will add further softness, creating a resting place that's even more tempting. (Maybe it's just us, but we could really go for a nap right about now!)

Have Good Scents

Awaken your senses by displaying fresh-cut flowers from your garden or your local farmers market. You can also use scented candles for a similar effect. Just be sure not to go overboard by choosing lighter fragrances like lilac or bergamot. Overpowering scents are just not sexy.

No Clutter Here

You can take the stress out of a room by making the space clutter-free. Use charming storage baskets for books and magazines to keep them organized and out of your way. To reduce clutter in closets or the need for large dressers, you can even store items like socks or lingerie in baskets under your bed.

Get Glowing

Avoid harsh overhead lighting by using delicate chandeliers or vintage lamps that will give your space a romantic radiance. Try playful tabletop lanterns for a more whimsical look.

Bring to Light

Supplement lamps with natural lighting. You can enhance whatever light comes into the room by hanging flowing, gauzy curtains. And if you'd like the option to doze in the dark, try sheer curtains that come with opaque backing.

Let Sparks Fly

Electronics in the bedroom are a no-no when it comes to making the place serene. Not only will a TV that faces your bed clash with clean and delicate feel of the room, having tech items close to where you sleep can actually increase stress and squelch those feelings of desire.

Ivory Tower

Avoid stark-white walls by painting your bedroom eggshell, ivory or cream. You’ll still get the clean feel of white, plus a warmer color will play well off the light and further enhance the ambiance. Another tip when it comes to walls is using them as a storage solution: Pretty hooks are perfect for hanging up your robe or purse.

Step Out

Little delicate touches can make all the difference. Having a soft rug to step on when you get out of bed, instead of a cold floor, will keep you feeling cozy all over as you start your day.
