    As one of the world's top interior designers, Martyn Lawrence-Bullard brings his brand of eclectic high design to Bravo's Million Dollar Decorators. It's been a lot of fun, he says of the show, which recently captured him obsessing over cocoa. Last week, three chocolate companies called me to be their spokesperson. But the calls that matter most are those from his clients like Jimmy Choo’s Tamara Mellon. Glo goes inside of his transformation of Mellon's NYC estate.

    Friends since they were teenagers, Lawrence-Bullard and Tamara Mellon, Choo co-founder, have had a long mutual admiration for each other’s sense of style. So when it came to designing her new 9,000-square-foot penthouse last year, Lawrence-Bullard took inspiration from Mellon herself. For me it was really all about coming up with something for her house that was a complete extension of Jimmy Choo, he says.

    The color palette is very much inspired and infused with fashion, says Lawrence-Bullard of setting the tone instantly in the entryway space of the Upper East Side residence. The shape of the furniture has a very 1970s flavor. But the whole house looks like the inspiration for her shoe collection. So it was really about blending interior design and fashion design, which is what Tamara is all about.

    In the first 5,000 square feet of terrace space, the dining area already possessed a high-end style all its own. But instead of going minimal, Lawrence-Bullard listened to his client about blending styles. To be able to walk in to a space like that, feel inspired and just make your clients dreams come true is a really amazing thing, he says.

    The result was a 1970s-style airy space with blends of polished and matte metals, reflective ceiling details and glass furnishings that reminded him of Jimmy Choo hardware. A lot of that inspiration came from looking at the collection, says Lawrence-Bullard. Elegance oozes from the color palette and brushed metal finishes on the dining set. To be honest, we haven’t really even finished it yet. It’s one of those things that you just keep adding to and refining.

    The recently purchased home was previously a posh private school called Lycee Francaise, but after the owner of the building decided to convert it into apartments, Mellon instantly knew she wanted in. For $30 million, she scored her dream home and was blown away by the natural beauty and solid construction of the space. I think that the architecture in certain spaces inspires you, says Lawrence-Bullard of stepping into the living room.

    Tamara loves color combinations and texture play in her rooms, he says of combining leather with animal skin, glass with wood and greens with pinks. In Tamara’s living room, I covered the floor in that leopard skin. And that leopard skin is basically the Jimmy Choo print from the brand. That’s a direct correlation between the fashion and the interior design of the home.

    In addition to having a very keen eye for style and high design, the Los Angeles-based interior designer insists, There are no rules in decorating. Mix a luxurious Schmacher fabric with accessories from CB2, he says, and enjoy the high-low design style. Be free to experiment with colors and textures and buy what you love, he adds. I love mixing patterns, and I think some of the most inspirational roams and spaces can come out of mixing patterns.

    With graphic wallpaper, smoky acrylic chairs and stagger pendant lighting, Lawrence-Bullard created a more monochromatic version of the '70s style for the kitchen. I do love that 1970s flavor that’s becoming very fashionable. It’s sexy—it’s a bit Studio 54.

    Going against conventional wisdom, Lawrence-Bullard removed the ceiling crown molding and covered Mellon’s hardwood floors wall-to-wall with plush, cream ivory carpeting. While it continues in the style of the home, the master bedroom is certainly a retreat from the bold colors and prints, opting instead for calming tones and mod furnishings. I really was able to interpret Tamara’s dreams with this home and make something that she really wanted to live in, he says.
