This mudroom entry by Delson or Sherman Architects doubles as a laundry room for a family of five. We love this idea of having laundry near the entry point for muddy clothes! The slate floor was chosen for its indestructibility amid the wet and the snow. The red-dyed bench and cubbies add a bright storage note.

A Step Above

Modeled after a Genkan entry, a feature of Japanese houses, this minimalist mudroom in Palo Alto, Calif., features exterior stone paving that continues into the home. CCS Architecture crafted the interior floor to be raised by 6 inches, where guests then walk with their shoes off.

A rustic, wood-paneled entry by JAS Design Build is turned into a functional unloading space with the addition of galvanized boot trays and hooks.

A Little Bit Country

This informal entry doubles as a mudroom in a space that sits at the intersection of the front entrance, the back entrance to the pool, and the side entrance to a guest cottage. The teak garden bench is perfect for handling damp guests, and the patina of wear adds to its appeal. Designer Anna Baskin Lattimore painted the typically white beadboard walls a stunning brownish-grey to cozy up the space.

The Great Divide

What would be a simple dividing wall between this Seattle's home entryway and kitchen was cleverly crafted into a functional family center. Designer Colleen Knowles and architect Margaret Menter crafted the cabinets into lockers with one for each member of the family, including the dog. Inside the cabinets, there are electrical outlets, so each person can also charge a device if needed.
