Get Crafty1 of 11
By Andie Huber
Love a good DIY but don't have the time to fire up the glue gun or wait for that second coat of paint to dry? We can relate. To simplify the process, we scoured the Web for the best craft projects that can be done in just one step. From bespoke baskets to a customized keyboard, these ten ideas will have you looking like a master crafter—without the time commitment.
Tape It2 of 11
Washi tape adds some fun to drab computer keyboards, with this idea from Her New Leaf. Available at craft stores and online, the tape is semi-transparent so keys will still be visible. Use a few different patterns and colors to make typing more fun.
Felt It3 of 11
Tanya Watson from Dans le Townhouse used leftover ceramic tile from a project and remade it into a handy trivet. To prevent it from scratching the table, she simply glued a piece of felt on the back. The result? A sweet spot to place your pot of tea.
Polish It4 of 11
Reese Kistel's blog, Theresa Kistel, shows how to upgrade plain old bobby pins with nail polish. Slide the bobby pins onto a piece of cardboard and paint away. Feeling ambitious? Add some glitter while the paint is still wet for an extra sparkly effect. The same idea could be applied to paper clips and clothespins.
Belt It5 of 11
Have a stash of magazines taking up space but you hate throwing them away? Inspired by HK Living, a Dutch-based home accessories company, this idea requires just two belts—buckle them around a stack of subscriptions and create a seat, step stool and conversation piece all-in-one.
Spray It6 of 11
For an easy storage solution, Rebecca Beach, the blogger behind A Daily Something, spray-painted regular brown grocery bags a trendy shade of gold. Folding down the tops give them a softer, more fabric-like look.
Wrap It7 of 11
Keep track of your various cords with this simple labeling system from Alicia Dirago of Dismount Creative. Wrap a strip of Washi tape around your cord and apply the same tape to your device so you can easily ID which plug goes with which gadget.
Melt It8 of 11
Create a catchall like Stacie Grissom did on her blog, Stars for Streelights. Place an old record on top of an oven-safe bowl, then "cook" it at 350 degrees. Once the record starts to warp, remove it with oven-safe gloves and mold it into the shape you want as it cools.
Dip It9 of 11
Baskets and totes, while great for offering rustic charm and functional storage, can sometimes be a little blah. Jewelry designer Deborah Flanagan's one-step basket upgrade, detailed on her blog Spiral Style, changes that thanks to Plasti-Dip (available at hardware stores, it's a rubberizing agent typically used as a coating on tool handles). Here, the bases of these baskets were painted in a colored band making them instantly look more modern.
Rock It10 of 11
The blog Lovely Indeed by Chelsea Costa, shows how quickly you can upgrade and organize your garden with some temporary tattoos. Simply print and stick onto smooth rocks and place around the yard or in your veggie garden.
Tag It11 of 11
At Eat Drink Chic, graphic designer Amy Moss shows how pretty (and easily) gift tags can be made using watercolors. Cut watercolor paper into shapes and paint them varying shades of one color, giving the tags an ombre effect.
