With birch-colored wood, plush leather recliners, mini blinds and decorative accents like candle holders, “Airstreams have been moving strongly toward modern, fresh interiors,” says Bob Wheeler, president of Airstream, Inc.

While your uncle’s camper may have had uncomfortable pleather seating in the '70s, these days Airstreams can have a more “SoHo loft look,” says Wheeler of the large windows and woven upholstered fabrics.

Custom cabinetry, recessed lighting and marble countertops are becoming more popular among those who are renovating their older Airstreams to make the campers their primary residences. And flat screen TVs are perfect for the limited space.

“Airstreamers always customize their travel trailers to make them feel more like a home, including pictures, table lamps, throw pillows and small decorative items that reflect their far-flung travels and adventures,” adds Wheeler.

In Cape Town, South Africa, the Grand Daddy Hotel boasts an Airstream Trailer Park Penthouse with seven campers designed by local artists. The “Pleasantville” trailer (pictured) was restored to the style it would have had in 1952 when it was first created.

The designers incorporated everything from fern plants to retro appliances and high gloss enamel flooring. Liam Mooney, artist and the project’s creative director, insists, “because of the history of them, you can design the way you want to pay respect to the era.”

Bold fabrics are an easy DIY way to customize your motor home like the Afro-Funk trailer at the Grand Daddy, which features earth-tones representative of the fashions of South Africa and pays homage to Nelson Mandela throughout.

Turn your trailer into a dream like this one named “Dorothy” at the Grand Daddy that is painted in a duck-egg blue color and covered in white polka dots. Adds Mooney, “These are the only Airstreams in the country of South Africa.”

Go ultra-feminine with a pretty in pink theme like the “Love of Lace” trailer, which boasts chandeliers, silk throw pillows and button-tufted seating. “You just have to have a vision,” says Mooney.
