How to Agree to Disagree
Sometimes couples who fight together, stay together—and they're better for it
3. Palling Around
The Fight: If we're being social (i.e. not sitting on our couch and watching a House Hunters marathon), then I'd rather it be with a lot of people. I try to plan things in groups. My girlfriend would rather just see one friend, or just a couple.
The Fundamental Disagreement: In a way, this comes down to how we view friendships. (Spoiler alert: This may sound gendered.) For me, the more the merrier. For her, the more quality-time, in-depth conversations, the merrier. My friends are people I love and spend time with. To that she'd add, "and confide in." It's a question of what "social" means.
How We Deal: We've adopted both strategies and are really clear about which is which. We throw a fair amount of parties, and I have carte blanche to make them, well, big. But if we're going out with a couple for dinner, then we really try not to add on anyone else to the event.
