The Dilemma: I'm a stay-at-home mom of two boys, ages 5 and 6. About a year-and-a-half ago, my husband expressed an interest in having another child, but I'm afraid that doing so would completely throw off our family dynamic. Our boys are finally at an age where I can delve more into my own education and career goals—a baby would be starting all over. At the same time, I don't want to regret not having more children. How did you decide when you were done having kids? —Indecisive
Caroline's Ruling: I hear what you're saying and understand your concerns, but I have to make a confession: The decision to have three children was not a conscious one; I left it up to fate.
Al and I are blessed to have beautiful, healthy children and, strangely enough, the decision to stop at three was driven by fate as well. When I was 35 years old, I thought I was pregnant. I had mixed emotions—I had three children already, ages 10, 8 and 7. Did I want to start all over with diapers and late-night feedings?
