Caroline Rules: Giving Back
"Real Housewife" Caroline Manzo offers advice on celebrating the holidays without spoiling your kids
-
The Dilemma: I have two children, ages 5 and 7. They are wonderful and I love them to pieces, which is why I want to give them everything when the holidays come around. But at the same time, I feel guilty when I consider the families affected by Sandy who lost everything. I want to instill the right values in my children, but I also don't want to be the kind of parent who refuses to get their kids presents. What's the right thing to do in this situation?
Caroline's Ruling: I applaud you for your desire to remember the families that were affected by Sandy. It's very sad to witness the physical devastation that the storm caused and the emotional toll it has taken on so many people. I've seen firsthand the kindness of strangers who have donated in many different ways to help the victims begin the journey of rebuilding their lives.
Having said that I love that you want your children to give back during the holiday season but I don't think guilt should play a part in your reasoning. Don't ever let your children feel bad for the good in their life. They should be grateful for their blessings but also be conscious that there are others that are not as fortunate as them.
