Girl Crush: Oscar-Worthy Women

By Natasha Burton While this actress isn’t exactly a nominee this Sunday, she’ll be running the whole show (literally) with cohost James Franco. We’re pretty excited to see if these two can pull off MC-ing an event that’s typically helmed by the likes of Billy Crystal. (Who, not gonna lie, we kind of miss. Maybe he’ll make a cameo?)

Natalie Portman

This Best Actress nominee has been one of our favorites for years due to her work in Garden State, V for Vendetta, Closer and Mars Attacks! (yep, she was in that!), and we only admired her more when she showed some surprising comedic chops on Saturday Night Live. Fingers crossed that she clinches the Oscar for Black Swan. It’s time.

Jennifer Lawrence

Though she’s a long shot for the Best Actress award, we can’t help but include the Winter’s Bone actress on this list for not only an amazing performance but also because of how she’s infiltrated the red-carpet scene with grace (and with some pretty edgy style choices). We hope to see more of this rising star.

Hailee Steinfeld

Speaking of rising stars, how can we not fall in love with this Best Supporting Actress nominee who, by the way, has also been killing it in the fashion department lately? Any gal who can steal scenes from a veteran like Jeff Bridges (in the Oscar-nominated True Grit) deserves to join the Jodie Foster ranks in our book.

Helena Bonham Carter

Truth be told, we are more excited to see what this Best Supporting Actress nominee wears on Sunday than we are to have her get the award for her work in The King’s Speech. (Honestly, who needs an Oscar when you get to star in all of Tim Burton’s crazy films by default?) From mismatched shoes to out-of-control ‘dos, Helena knows how to make a swanky event less stuffy.

Amy Adams

We’re also a little obsessed with this Best Supporting Actress nominee for her sheer adorableness — a quality of Amy’s that undoubtedly led the Academy to be blown away by her attitude-filled character in The Fighter.

Mary Zophres

This costume designer is the woman behind the Dude’s bathrobe in The Big Lebowski and those orange and blue tuxedos in Dumb and Dumber, not to mention that she’s outfitted tons of other great films from O Brother, Where Art Thou to Catch Me If You Can. She’s nominated for her first Oscar this year for her work in True Grit.

Colleen Atwood

Also up for the costume design award is the genius behind Alice in Wonderland’s styling. She’s worked on a number of Tim Burton’s films (Sweeney Todd, Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands) as well as iconic movies like Silence of the Lambs and Philadelphia. All we know is this category will be a tough one — so much talent to choose from.

Debra Granik

Up for Best Adapted Screenplay is the woman behind the script for Winter’s Bone, and this nomination is her big mainstream break career-wise after getting recognized multiple times in the film festival circuit and taking the big prize at Sundance in 2010.

Lisa Cholodenko

This Oscar nominee both wrote and directed the critically acclaimed The Kids Are All Right, and she’s up for the Best Original Screenplay prize. Even if you haven’t seen the film, you’ve probably inadvertently seen Lisa’s work on the small screen as she’s directed episodes of TV shows like Hung, The L Word and Six Feet Under.

Pamela Martin

In an industry so dominated by men, it’s great to see a woman nominated in the Best Film Editing category this year. This editor is not only the brains behind this year’s multiple-category-nominated movie The Fighter, she’s also edited other great films like Little Miss Sunshine and Saved!.
