Thanks to social media, it's easier than ever to keep constant tabs on our friends and acquaintances. We know when someone gets engaged, buys a new house, lands a book deal, boards a plane for the Mayan Riviera. And sure, we're happy for these people—ok, mostly happy. Because it's hard not to feel a twinge of envy, which can easily spiral into all-out self-pity. To help you avoid the slippery slope that is comparing yourself to others, here are eight quotes to remember.

Another way to say this? Worry about yourself. If you take a long, hard look at what someone else has, chances are you might realize it's not really what you'd want after all—except maybe for that trip to the Mayan Riviera.
