The "I Do" Re-Do
Celebrity Trend Alert: Marriage Vow Renewal
Trend alert! Renewing wedding vows is all the rage with Hollywood's hottest couples, including two ceremonies that just happened this weekend: Heidi Klum and Seal, and Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott. Sharon Naylor, author of over 35 wedding planning books, says on her blog that these ceremonies are necessary in today's "fast-paced world, where we all have other things clamoring for our attention ... otherwise the cherished partner can feel like an appliance or some taken-for-granted, almost invisible, entity in the house."
Married for five years, Heidi Klum and Seal celebrate each anniversary with a themed vow renewal. The idea of a yearly celebration — not just a re-do of a traditional wedding — is lovely, though we wonder whether vow-renewal should be reserved for marriage milestones. "Those who have chosen to renew wedding vows are essentially then re-infusing their marriage with the reminder of what it meant to get married in the first place," says Southern California Rabbi Glenn Ettman. "A good time to do this would be at a significant anniversary ... or perhaps after a life-altering moment."
Another question that comes up is whether vow renewals should be intimate, family gatherings or big blowouts. "Weddings or vow renewals never have to be lavish affairs — what is important is the meaning of the ceremony itself and the important feelings of the union between the two people involved," says Rabbi Ettman. And, finally, the ever-important consideration of celebratory baubles arises. Do you need to put a ring on it all over again?
