    Prom is supposed to be the culmination of your high school experience, the final hurrah before graduation, a chance to celebrate with your friends, and a place to dance (unless your father is the town minister and forbids it). Regardless of what your expectations for prom were—or are—one thing is for certain: It rarely turns out as planned. Nine women, aged 22 to 63, look back at the big night and share what they wish they'd known, not to mention a few incriminating fashion photos. (Hello, taffeta!)

  • What I Wish I'd Known On Prom Night
    For my senior prom, I spent months making the perfect white dress. It was a dream! But unfortunately, after all the pictures were taken, I had to put on my narrow, rectangular, black glasses for the rest of the evening—I was blind without them! I wish I had asked my mother for contacts before the prom, rather than as a post-graduation gift.

    I spent much of the mid to late '90s preoccupied with philosophical darkness and wishing someone like Alexander Hamilton (who died in 1804) could be my boyfriend. Because he wasn't around to ask me, I settled on wearing a prom dress that resembled something from his era. I just wish I'd known that eyeshadow should never coordinate perfectly with your outfit.

    The guy who asked me to the prom was suspended from school and had to wait in the limo because he wasn't allowed inside. I wasn't necessarily upset about it—I spent the night dancing with another cute guy—but I wish I had thought to just ask someone else.

    Picking my dress out with my mom was a special memory I won't forget, but I have no idea why we chose one that revealed my stomach. Don't get me wrong, I did feel beautiful that night, but looking back, it does make me laugh! Whatever you choose to wear, make it your own, and make sure you feel comfortable in it.

    My prom date and I were really into each other, but as the night progressed, I grew increasingly nervous that he hadn't kissed me yet. In fact, it was all I thought about. Then, when the moment came, I got terrified and gave him a high five instead. My advice would have to be to fear nothing. Get your kiss and remember it forever.

    I wish I had worn my hair up! Prom is 95 percent about the pictures, and by the time I started taking mine on the big night, I was already overheated. If my hair would have been off my shoulders, then I would have been sweat-free!

    Rather than looking outside our inner circle for dates, my friends and I all decided to go with each other. My date was a guy friend who ended up making out with another girl friend all evening.
