Alison Sweeney of "The Biggest Loser" Gives Her New Year's Resolution Tips
Check in with yourself.
Keep track of your progress week by week—not day by day. "If I hold myself accountable at the end of each day, I feel like I've fallen short or messed up," says Sweeney. "But If I give myself a whole week to balance everything out, then I have a much better chance of success. At the end of each week, I evaluate how I've done. Did I balance it all out? Did I allow myself to lose focus?"
Part of staying on track is also making the needed adjustments to your daily life to fit your new intention into the mix. "When you become a parent, you always hear about how you have to get your kid on a routine, on a schedule," says Sweeney. "But adults need that too." If your goal is weight loss, for example, then she suggests thinking about your intention as a "lifestyle change" as opposed to being on a diet. "If you struggle or fall off the wagon a little bit, you can just try again instead of saying, 'Oh, that diet didn't work for me—I give up,'" she says.
Help others help you.
"One of the things we talk about on The Biggest Loser is incorporating your friends and family members into your lifestyle," says Sweeney. "But it doesn't always go as easily as you think."
While she says that you can't expect people to automatically change their lifestyles to the one that you're trying to adopt, it is important to be open about the changes you want to make in the new year and why. That way, your loved ones can help you along. "When your goal's positive and inspirational, it's hard for people to be negative or destructive," she says.
