However, having a lifetime pal shows his dedication to his relationships, as well as his ability to maintain a close bond with another person as they change and grow over the years.

Real Brother

Blood is thicker than water, as the saying goes, so if your man’s best pal is his actual bro, this shows that he is really close to his family — a very good sign if you two are considering starting your own brood one day. While his clear commitment to his kin shows that family will always come first in his mind, we do wonder: Is he BFF with his brother because he has trouble making friends?

His Dad

This choice of BFF also indicates a close familial bond — and it signifies that your guy not only has respect for his parents, but that he may even idolize his dear old dad. We say: If you want to know what kind of husband and father your man will be, just look at his dad, since he probably wants to be just like him.

His Mom

It’s safe to say that dating a man who is too close to his mother is many women’s worst nightmare. But as long as his mom isn’t still doting upon him and doing his laundry, having her as his best friend can be a good thing: A strong mother-son bond shows that your guy both respects and cherishes women, making him more likely to respond to your emotional needs and appreciate you.

His Dog

Sure, having a non-human BFF may show that your guy is a bit of a loner, but a dog is a man’s best friend, after all. If your guy’s pooch is his number one pal, it shows that he’s a man who appreciates loyalty, knows that actions speak louder than words and understands the concept of unconditional love.

A guy who has a female BFF may be a really sensitive, thoughtful guy who respects women’s opinions. Just watch out if he starts choosing to hang with her instead of you, or sleeps over at her place ... even if he claims they are “just friends.” A guy you’re dating — or married to for that matter — should only be staying the night with one woman: you.

His Ex-Girlfriend

All we have to say to this one is … uh-oh. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being friendly with one’s ex, but if your man considers his ex-girlfriend to be his primary confidant, this is a big red flag. Sure, there are exceptions, but he could still be in love with her or, at the very least, has unrealistic expectations of both their relationship and the one he has with you. (Because, no, you don’t have to be okay with the fact that he talks to her on the phone every day.)

His Therapist

Here’s another uh-oh BFF. Sure, your shrink knows a lot about you, perhaps more than anyone else in your life ever will, but if your guy considers his therapist — someone he pays to listen to him — to be his bestest friend, this is a problem. Also, watch out for this guy being too needy: He may be the type who requires your advice and emotional support 24/7.

His Assistant

Again, people on your payroll should not automatically be considered "friends," in most cases. So, if your guy thinks the person following him around with a pad and paper, jotting down his every request, is his BFF, he not only needs to get a reality check, he should also step down from his high horse.

Cubical Mate

If your guy’s BFF is the person he is forced to sit next to for 8-10 hours a day, five days a week, this may indicate that he is too lazy to put effort into making friends. On the other hand, if he works a lot and doesn’t have time to cultivate relationships outside of the office, perhaps he’s just resourceful. Either way, having his cubical mate as his closest friend signals that he may put work as his top priority.

Pen Pal

What grown man has a pen pal? He could be a romantic. Or perhaps he’s afraid of real intimacy and is more comfortable expressing his feelings from a distance. Or maybe he spent some time in prison, where he honed these pen-pal skills of his — “pen” being short for penitentiary. Just be sure this pal of his isn't back in the slammer.
