Update your closet without spending a dime

Graphic black and white is one of the spring's biggest trends—which you can easily imitate by pairing separates you already have in your wardrobe, says Doria Santlofer, an editorial fashion stylist. The colors never clash, so don't be afraid to get creative. Easy ideas: Layer a short black T-shirt over a white camisole to create a contrasting effect, add a white belt to instantly update a classic LBD, or pair last summer's long striped maxi skirt with a graphic top.

Forget the mini. By spring, cool Bermuda-style shorts will be a must. All you have to do is chop and hem a longer pair of wide-leg pants to create them at home, says Santlofer. Not handy with a sewing machine? Simply roll them at the bottom for a totally casual vibe.

If last year's ruffled infinity scarf is now collecting dust in your closet, a little snip can give it new purpose: Ruffles are all the rage this season, so simply cut this scarf into a regular length and use it as a wrap with your favorite shoulder-baring dress, says Zyla.

Does everyone have a closet full of ornately beaded pieces? Probably not, admits Zyla. He suggests spending some time in your jewelry box to find a fresh way to wear the trend. Take a really embellished, chunky, vintage-style necklace, and pair it with something printed, he says. It makes the blouse look more theatrical, and connects with the beading trend.

Sheer tops and dresses are a major must-have—especially those that expose undergarments in a subtly sexy way. Instead of a traditional camisole, wear your see-through blouse with a matching bandeau top underneath, says Zyla. The color of the bandeau should be harmonious with the blouse—don't wear nude under a white blouse, wear bright white.

PJs have officially made their way from the sheets to the streets. The look may seem like a no-brainer, but Zyla warns that there is a fine line between looking stylish and looking sloppy. Wear your beautiful silk pajama pants with a body-conscious jersey top, and a really sexy strappy sandal, suggests Zyla.

This season, leather should be worn in a very sleek, architectural way, rather than as a lived-in staple. To get the look, pair leather items with pieces that offer plenty of structure. This will keep the look clean and artful from head to toe, says Zyla.

Many of us are hesitant to wear horizontal stripes for fear they will be unflattering, but trendy bold stripes can actually highlight your curves, rather than detract from them, says Zyla. Wear a brightly colored dress with a belt that cuts in the middle, he says. Repeat the color of the belt in the shoe. That way, you create four quadrants across the body, and acknowledge the trend without buying anything new.
