Closet Case1 of 9
By Naomi Jaul
We're all for comfort and convenience, so we know how easy it can be to wear the same dark pants and blouse (or some variation of it) day in, day out. But when you feel like you have to explain your outfit to colleagues (these aren't the same pants I wore yesterday, they only look like the same ones), it might be time to change things up. Find out the giveaway signs that you're headed toward a fashion slump—and how you can stylishly dig your way out.
Boring Baubles2 of 9
Style Rut: The only accessories you've been wearing are the studs you sleep in.
Style Rx: Build a basic repertoire: A statement necklace, cocktail ring, bangles and fun earrings are all you need to keep your outfits from looking redundant, suggests style strategist Audrey Beaulac.
Flipping Out3 of 9
Style Rut: You wear flip-flops so often you're sporting a tan line across your foot.
Style Rx: We get it: Flip-flops are just so easy. To help vary things, "Invest in an equally comfy pair of slip-ons like T-strap leather sandals," says stylist and blogger Justina Blakeney.
In the Dark4 of 9
Style Rut: If someone peeked inside your closet, they might think you were depressed: black, gray and navy have taken over the rails with a vengeance.
Style Rx: Sure, black is always flattering but that doesn't mean you should avoid all color. Add brights in the right places: A scarf, shirt or tee that sits next to your face in color that's one shade lighter than your eyes is a fool-proof way to flatter your face.
Trend Trial5 of 9
Style Rut: You've been wearing the same safe striped T-shirts for years.
Style Rx: Incorporating a new trend into your wardrobe will instantly update your outfit. "Prints will be big this fall, especially moody florals in autumnal shades," says Blakeney. Instead of your go-to stripes, opt for color-blocked styles or a floral print in wearable, muted shades.
Missing Piece6 of 9
Style Rut: You're sick of everything in your closet.
Style Rx: "One reason people feel stuck is because of holes in their wardrobe," says Beaulac. "Take all your go-to outfits out of your closet and see what's left." We bet you'll find a least one great skirt you've never worn because you don't know what to pair with it or a cute top you love but doesn't look quite right with your jeans. "Shop for pieces to complete these unworn outfits," says Beaulac. "You'll find a whole new cohesive wardrobe you love, filled with variety."
Bare Necessities7 of 9
Style Rut: You can't remember the last time you bought a new bra.
Style Rx: "Most women aren't wearing underwear that fits properly, and it makes them feel frumpy," says Beaulac. "The right fitting undergarments will make you feel and look better in your clothes, so get sized for new bras somewhere like Nordstroms—invest in some beautiful sets that make you feel gorgeous.”
Stretch Routine8 of 9
Style Rut: You've worn your yoga pants to places where no mats are required.
Style Rx: Put the Lululemons down. "Opt for a pair of pants with a little stretch and a more forgiving silhouette—like cotton harem pants or cuffed jersey versions," says Blakeney. "It's a more stylish way to stay comfy."
Shop Talk9 of 9
Style Rut: You avoid shopping because you never know what to buy.
Style Rx: Try Beaulac's fun trick: "Create a new persona for yourself by combining three celebrity names you whose style you admire—and that suits your lifestyle—like AlexaKateGisele," she suggests. When you're shopping, ask yourself what you could imagine your mythical style maven wearing.
