Tips to organize your closet

Meet Marina Monroe, creative director of Stylehaüs, a membership-based company that helps you streamline your style—and your closet. Stylehaüs member Olga Valentina was in urgent need of having her overflowing closet spruced up in time for the warmer weather.

Valentina made good use of the Net-A-Porter boxes that she had accumulated from a few online shopping sprees. The clean-looking black containers now hold bulky knit sweaters, out-of-season handbags, and accessories that won't need to be resurrected until next season.

Use just one or two hanger styles to keep the space streamlined. I swear by slim velvet hangers that allow you to maximize space, and they keep even the daintiest of tanks and dresses from slipping, says Monroe. While Valentina uses these for her tops and lightweight jackets, she hangs heavier items (like coats and trousers) on sturdier wooden hangers.

Organize clothing by type and length. If you group all your long dresses together and separate them from your shorter dresses, then you'll create an easier way to access what you have, says Monroe.

The best part of a closet cleanout? Discovering long-forgotten pieces; you never know what's lurking in the back of the closet, just waiting to be tended to. Fix, repair and clean your garments that need it. You'll find pieces become wearable again, says Monroe.

As a reminder for key pairings, hang clothes together to make outfits, says Monroe. When jackets were placed next to specific skirts or pants, it helped Valentina cut down her getting-ready time.

Valentina stashes her costume jewelry in an easy-access bureau drawer, where pieces are organized in simple, open-face boxes.
