Find The Most Flattering Styles For Your Body TypeBy Nicole Mann Novick
The styling duo of Emily Current and Meritt Elliott has a very full schedule: fashioning editorial features for magazines, dressing celebrities for the red carpet and designing their aptly named and wildly popular denim and clothing line, Current/Elliott. While the pair may wear many hats, their success and expertise relies on the fact that they know just how to wear them. So we asked this fashion powerhouse: What are the most flattering styles for every body type?
1. What styles of clothing would you suggest for someone with an hourglass shape?
To properly flaunt your curvy silhouette, accentuate your waist and always go for fitted fabrics and styles in solid colors. Opt for tops that taper at the waist and pants that slightly flare for balance. We love bias-cut dresses with enough room to shimmy and shift that will crease at and accentuate your natural waist. And ALWAYS avoid high necklines, pleats and baggy styles! Explore waist-cinching belts and pencil skirts à la Joan Harris from Mad Men.
2. What looks best suit fuller-breasted women?
It's all in the neckline. Scoop, V and square necklines can elongate your neck and minimize a big bust. Try to avoid high necklines like crewneck T-shirts. When dressing up, try wrap dresses and ditch anything empire, smocked or tent-like. Also, stay away from busy prints and horizontal stripes, and invest in some great belts to nip in at the waist and create yummy curves.
3. When styling a fuller-figured woman, what kinds of outfits do you choose?
When styling a fuller-figured woman, we tend to apply the same rules we use when also styling a petite actress for a red carpet or an editorial shoot. Flattering is flattering! Monochromic and clean lines are a must, and when the person is tempted by a shapeless top or dress, we say run the other way! Three-quarter sleeves are most flattering and can be a subtle way to show some skin. Additionally, bootleg or flare leg pants add instant length and litheness. Elongating yourself is key! ...Read More
4. What styling tips do you have for someone who is petite?
When dressing petite women, less is certainly more! Monochromatic colors give the illusion of length, and long pants that drape over high heels can sneakily add the inches you weren't born with. Wear silhouettes that fit snugly and properly. Let your tall friends rock the baggy and loose-fitting trends, but you don't to want look like you are playing dress-up.
5. How about someone who is tall and lean?
Tall and lean friends, a different set of rules applies for you. Mix and match colors and prints to add curves, and if need be, truncate your legs. Tunic tops, pleats and ruffles can create needed volume and femininity.
6. How do you dress a woman who is pear-shaped?
A pear-shaped figure can be challenging but, when styled right, can look beautifully feminine. We tend to favor tailored looks and include either A-line skirts or boot cut pants with shrunken, structured button ups and blazers. If you want to wear print, shine or flare, it should be on your shoulders or around your neck. This will draw attention UP and balance a bottom-heavy body.
7. Are there universal styling tips for women of every body type?
After years of dressing women of every age and body and type, we tend to always gravitate to our secret styling code. We recommend darker, solid colors to minimize challenging areas and love light colors, shine and prints to flaunt your best assets. It's all about balance. If you are into soft, flowy, feminine dresses, throw on a shrunken, dark blazer to cinch in a look and create that perfect high/low look. If you adore your baggy, holey jeans, grab a clean and structured solid shirt. Balance is beautiful! And when in doubt, go simple and classic and throw flavor and risk into your accessories.
